In 1989 I was asked to travel to Guinea-Bissau, a former portuguese colony in west-Africa, for VPRO Dutch National Radio. I was to obtain original recordings of local tribes for one of their dedicated radio shows on ethnomusicology and non-western culture. After traveling across the coastal archipelago I hit upon in the small rice farmer's village of Foia in the province of Bijagos. Here I was invited by a blind 70-year old musician to set up my equipment and do a recording session with the whole village population involved, in exchange for sufficient palm wine for all to stick it out throughout the evening. This is the original recording that has been edited down to +75 min. length, the session went on for over 3 hours... The anonymous blind musician whose lead voice and one-string instrument slowly start off before gaining intensity and drive, had the entire village population joining in, singing and clapping and hitting a square drum, and time and place became endless, transcendental. Sheer energetic joy...
